Atletico de Kolkata play their final league game of the Indian Super League this season on Friday against Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, before moving on to participate in the two-legged semifinals with an aim to make it to the finals this year once again.
The Kolkata franchisee are currently on 23 points, and a win tonight at home will take them to the top of the league, and pit them against the fourth-placed team in the ISL playoffs.
So far, Kolkata, FC Goa, and Delhi Dynamos have made their way to the next stage of the ISL this year. The crucial clash tomorrow between Chennaiyin FC and FC Pune City will determine who makes it as the fourth team for the playoffs.
ATK coach Antonio Habas can feel comfortable of fielding his reserve players for today's game with an eye on the upcoming matches. Also, a much-needed rest for the players will also act as a boost to their being match fit for the playoffs. "I'm very happy with us qualifying for the semis. I think the confident mentality of the team has worked," the Spanish coach said.
"In football, you lose some day, you win some day. Football has a lot to do with your mental state, you have to stay positive," Habas said.
Mumbai City FC will be playing for pride today, and they can only aim to prevent a rockbottom finish with a favourable result today. Nicolas Anelka's men have 13 points from the same number of games at the moment, and they have to aware of the home side today, who started their incredible form in the league this season following a 4-1 win over Mumbai in the first leg.
Anelka's side haven't won any of their last seven games, and the presence of star players like Sunil Chhetri and Sony Norde never really helped in bringing out the wins. Mumbai won just three games this season.
"If you look at the beginning of the season, it was exactly like last season. We started winning and then later on we couldn't hold on to that streak," the Frenchman said. "I don't know why but it was exactly the same this year. The players tried their best but we couldn't help it."
