The first match under the Louis Van Gaal era could not have gone better for Manchester United – the formation working perfectly, the players performing, and goals raining in left, right and centre.

Now, Van Gaal and his new United side will look to build on that 7-0 thumping of LA Galaxy when they face Serie A side Roma in an International Champions Cup match in Denver.
The United players looked right at home under Van Gaal's new 3-4-3 formation, with Darren Fletcher playing the holding role in midfield as new signing Ander Herrera dictated the pace of the match, with aplomb it must be said, alongside the captain of the day.
Herrera's performance would have been met with much joy amongst the United fans as they finally saw a midfielder who looked capable of filling, if only partially, but at least getting somewhere near, the shoes of Paul Scholes.
Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck also looked good up front, with the strike duo scoring goals as well, as United enjoyed a nice night out in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Van Gaal, though, will know his team face a much more difficult opposition in Roma, who finished second in the Serie A last season, and are gunning for the title in the next campaign, having already made a few astute signings in the transfer window, none more so than former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole.
The United manager, who has already made his feelings about the preseason tour to the USA clear, also was not too happy about the start time, with his player set to sweat it out in the afternoon.
"It's unbelievable that we are playing at two in the afternoon [local time], but we'll adapt to the situation," Van Gaal said.
"All the players will play 45 minutes except Tom [Cleverley] and [Tyler] Blackett, who will play 90 minutes, and for these players it will be hard. We have enough players to have 45 minutes each and I hope we can have a drink. I'll convince ref to have a drinks break like I did in Fortaleza [at the World Cup]."
Van Gaal revealed he was already instilling his plans and ideas into the United squad, which will be without the injured Rafael, and he was quite happy with the progress.
"You have to take into account the qualities of the opponent and give your team structure to do that so in training this morning we had a team playing like Roma and a team playing like United. We gave them structure," he added.
"The players are willing to pick up all the information that we say which is very important. They want to perform our philosophy. We have to wait and see how it develops.
"This morning was not a good session. It was 11 vs 11 but tonight the positional play was great. They made the pitch big when they had the ball and small when they didn't have it. I see progression every day but also not good things. We are there to improve that."
Roma started their preseason tour of the United States with a 1-0 victory over another Premier League side in Liverpool, and manager Rudi Garcia will want to make it two wins out of two against English opposition.
