Oman will still be on cloud nine after pulling off that massive victory over Ireland in their ICC World T20 2106 opener. The Asian side, though, need to come back down to earth and get back to business again when they play the Netherlands in another Group A match of the World T20 in Dharamsala.
The victory over Ireland was quite outstanding, considering it was against a team experienced in playing in the big tournaments time and again.
Oman did reasonably well to keep Ireland to a score of under 160 under lights, but nobody expected them to go on and chase down Ireland's 154.
The prospects of the chase, though, looked good when Zeeshan Maqsood and Khawar Ali put on a nice opening partnership of 69. However, when Kevin O'Brien picked up the openers in the space of a couple of overs, it looked like the Oman cookie would crumble pretty quickly. And that feeling seemed justified when Oman went from 69/0 to 90/5.
But Jatinder Singh and Amir Ali put on a nice sixth wicket partnership of 47 runs, before the latter caught fire, finishing with an unbeaten 17-ball 32 (5x4, 1x6) to script a dramatic Oman victory.
For Oman to continue that momentum, they will need a few more heroes to step up against a smarting Netherlands. After bowling really well to restrict Bangladesh to 153 -- and Bangladesh only got to that score thanks to the brilliance of Tamim Iqbal -- the Netherlands just could not get going in the chase.
The openers got stuck, failing to really push on, and with wickets falling at regular intervals, Holland could not build the momentum required to chase down the total. They put up a decent effort towards the end, but by then there was just too much to do.
That cannot happen against Oman, if the Netherlands are to stay in this World T20. A loss will mean their chances of making the Super 10 stage have gone up in smoke, so there really is only one gear for the Netherlands to play in against Oman.
