After Manchester United's loss to Swansea City last night, Southampton find themselves with a chance of overtaking Louis Van Gaal's men in the standings table. The Saints are just a point behind United and a victory tonight against Liverpool would put them ahead of Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will also be eager for a win as it could help them inch closer to the elusive Champions League spot.
A huge game is on the cards as far as the Champions League spots are concerned. With a few more matches to go in the EPL, the fight for fourth spot is well and truly on.
Though Liverpool might have met Southampton in the opening weekend of EPL, the latter have looked a stronger side after their loss, having defeated some big teams in the league so far. Liverpool have reasons to worry about this Southampton side as they gear up for the clash at St Mary's.
Liverpool's boss Brendan Rodgers is aware of the progress that has been made by Southampton.
"They've kept their momentum going over the last five seasons," Rodgers told EPL's official website.
"They've found themselves in the top four and deservedly so."
The Reds have been in amazing form of late, having been unbeaten in their last six EPL matches – 4 wins and 2 draws as compared to Southampton's 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw.
"With 13 games to go, it would be a big step for us to get a result. We know we've got the quality and confidence to go there and get a result. We need to keep edging towards it (the top four)."
But Liverpool will have to cope with the absence of key player Steven Gerrard for this game; the Reds have however performed well even when their iconic star has not played for them.
Having started the season poorly, Liverpool have started to build momentum just at the right time with the Champions League places up for grabs.
The Reds would be guaranteed European football if they finish the season on a high.
With players such as Daniel Sturridge fully fit and Martio Balotelli among the goals, Liverpool suddenly look a different side. Along with the mentioned forwards, youngster Jordon Ibe has been a huge player for them this year.
