A victory for either of the teams is very important, as they are unlikely to take many points away from their other two Group D opponents – Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund. Galatasaray will be looking to make full use of their famous crowd support to make it as difficult as possible for Anderlecht to play their natural game.
"We'll try to get three points with the help of our fans," said Cesare Prandelli, the new manager of Galatasaray. "Before coming here, I knew how nice the stadium was and all about its unique atmosphere."
The Turkish outfit has not hit the ground running at the start of this season, and are struggling to create chances from the centre. Veteran Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder will be the key man in the midfield for the Galatasaray if they are to get a result out of this game.
The midfielder joined Galatasaray's preseason training a little late because of the World Cup, and has been under constant supervision from the medical team, who are trying to nurse the 30-year-old back to full match fitness.
Up front, Galatasaray will be banking on the strong shoulders of Burak Yilmaz to do most of the scoring. Yilmaz has been the main scorer for Galatasaray since he joined the club in 2012. The 29-year-old striker has scored 41 goals in 64 games for Galatasaray, and will be looking to increase his tally for them.
Although Galatasaray are the favourites to win the game, history is against them. Galatasaray have faced Belgian opponents only once before, losing 3-1 to Club Brugge on aggregate, after a goalless draw at home. Also, Glaltasaray have failed to win any of their last four Champions League openers.
Meanwhile, Anderlecht are on an eight-match unbeaten streak at the moment, and would be looking to carry their momentum forward. It is necessary for either of the clubs to win the match, as both would be looking to book a place in the Europa League, if not in the Champions League knockout rounds.
The Belgians are underdogs in this encounter, carrying a very young side with them. Their Champions League record is not too great either, with them finishing bottom of their respective groups the last seven times they qualified for the competition. The last time they proceeded from the Group Stage to the Round of 16 was in the 2000-01 season.
