Season 4 of "Bates Motel" is underway and if there's been a big revelation so far, it is that Norman's (Freddie Highmore) psychosis will damage his relationship with the woman he is obsessed with, his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga). The two will struggle to maintain some semblance of normalcy, but can they achieve it? This will be explored in Season 4 Episode 2 titled "Goodnight Mother."
The Season 4 premiere provided an exposition into what fans can expect in the next few episodes. In Episode 1, Norman suffered from psychotic episodes and even strangled Emma's (Olivia Cooke) mother Audrey (Karina Logue) to death.
His precarious mental condition became apparent to his mother who, in a moment of utter desperation, proposed to Romero (Nestor Carbonell) to use his insurance. The Sheriff refused to marry Norma, and by extension, provide the financial security needed for Norman's admission into Pineview mental asylum. Will he change his mind?
[Spoiler Alert]
According to the synopsis for the upcoming episode (via TV Guide), Romero's decision will have an impact on the Bateses. The Sheriff might agree to help the matriarch after all. Although it is unclear if the nature of assistance will result in a marriage, it will help the troubled mother and son, who will have some tense moments in Episode 2.
The promo captures a chilling dinner scene in the Bates residence. Norman gets angry at his mother for killing Bradley. He says, "I'm not leaving you mother. I don't trust you. I don't think you're in your right mind and trying to sabotage me."
When Norma says that he scares her, Norman replies, "I think you killed Bradley Martin (Nicola Peltz) and Blair Watson (Keegan Connor Tracy) because you were jealous of them and you're trying to pin it all on me and have me locked up. I will not let you do that."
Norma looks terrified and Norman seems crazed. It remains to be seen if she can bring him around from another spell of madness.
Season 4 Episode 2's synopsis reads:
Norma and Norman face off as they suspect each other of horrible actions; Dylan thinks about his future with Emma; and Romero makes a choice that will have a big impact on the Bates family.
"Bates Motel" Season 4 Episode 2 will be aired Monday, March 14, at 9 p.m. on A&E. You can live-stream the episode here.
