The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) passed the resolution against Sri Lanka on the alleged war crimes on Thursday. 24 countries including India voted in favour of the resolution, 15 against and eight abstained from voting.
Through the resolution, the United States, the European Union and India have urged Sri Lanka to investigate the alleged war crimes committed both by the Sri Lankan army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
With huge pressure from DMK and AIADMK parties from Tamil Nadu, India voted in favour of the US-led resolution. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had earlier said in the Parliament that the country would vote against Sri Lanka.
However, 15 countries including Russia, China and Pakistan voted against the resolution.
