German car-maker Volkswagen is expected to launch its new compact sedan Ameo in India in June this year. According to a report of AutoCar India, the Ameo compact sedan will be launched in India with only petrol engine options.
Volkswagen Ameo was unveiled in India a day before the Auto expo 2016 in February. The car, which has been specifically designed for the Indian market, was expected to come powered by 1.2-litre three-cylinder MPI petrol engine and 1.5-litre four-cylinder TDI diesel engine. Going by the latest report, while the 1.2-litre three-cylinder MPI petrol will be on offer, the latter would not make it to the Ameo now as the company is planning to update this engine with a new turbocharger. The same diesel engine also does duty in the Polo hatchback and Vento sedan. The addition of the new turbocharger will result in the increase in power to 112bhp. The new engine will also make it to the Vento later.
Volkswagen is expected to start the delivery of the Ameo in India from July. The petrol engine of the Ameo can churn out 74bhp of power and 110Nm of peak torque and is expected to come mated with five-speed manual transmission.
The Ameo will rival segment leaders like Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent. Volkswagen is expected to price the new compact sedan, a made-in-India and made-for-India car, in the range of Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh.
As for features, the Ameo is likely to get cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, static cornering lights, touchscreen multimedia music system with Mirror link, iPod connectivity, and phonebook and SMS viewer.
