The new compact sedan Volkswagen Ameo is likely to have its India launch in June this year. The Ameo, which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2016, is a made-in-India, made-for-India compact sedan designed and manufactured at the company's Chakan facility.
Although Volkswagen had earlier confirmed that the Ameo will make its market entry in the second quarter of the year, it had not specified the launch date. Now a report in Zigwheels, citing sources close to the development, says the company is looking ahead to launch the Ameo in the domestic market in June.
The Ameo will be offered in both petrol and diesel engines — a 1.2-litre three-cylinder MPI petrol and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder TDI diesel engine. The diesel engine will be available with five-speed manual and seven-speed DSG transmissions, while the petrol engine will come with only five-speed manual transmission. The Ameo is the first offering from Volkswagen in the compact sedan segment in India.
To be pitted against Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent in the market, the Ameo will come equipped with dual front airbags and ABS even in the base variants.
In India, the Ameo is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 5 to Rs 8 lakh, and will house features like cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, static cornering lights, touchscreen multimedia music system with Mirror link, iPod connectivity, and phonebook and SMS viewer.
