Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam 2 has opened to an average response at the US box office in the premiere shows on Thursday, Aug 9 and failed to beat the collection records of Vishwaroopam and Uttama Villain.
Vishwaroopam 2 is a circumquel to Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam, which has been a big hit at the US box office with its collection reaching $1,240,287. Its success had created a lot of hype for the second installment. The hype made its overseas theatrical rights sell at a record price and the distributors booked over 150 screens across the US in bid to cash in on Kamal mania in the country.
The distributors held premiere shows of Vishwaroopam 2 in the country, but the uncertainty in its release date led to poor advance booking. Hence, the movie opened to average response at the US box office. The poor planning of its release is probably the reason behind the movie failing to make the expected amount of collection.
The distributors are yet to reveal its collection figures. If we are to go by early hours' updates, Vishwaroopam 2 has collected $38,604 from 97 locations at the US box office in the premiere shows and this number is likely go up, when the final figures are revealed. Idlebrain Jeevi tweeted, "#Vishwaroopam2 hourly gross for premieres at 2 pm PST in USA is $38,604 from 97 locations. Expecting decent numbers"
Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam and Uttama Villain had collected $257,110 and 81,000 at the US box office in premiere shows. Vishwaroopam 2 was expected to beat these records, but has failed to do so with a big margin.
Besides playing the lead role, Kamal Haasan has also written, directed and produced Vishwaroopam 2 that stars Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur, Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah. The movie has received mixed reviews from the audience. It is to be seen how it will perform at the US box office in the coming days.
