India got their new head coach on Thursday as the BCCI president and Board secretary Ajay Shirke announced the name of Anil Kumble, who has been roped in for the next one year. Kumble edged past 56 other applicants to land in this role.
It will indeed be a huge responsibility for the former India captain and a legendary leg spinner. But his composure, experience and ability to handle situations are likely to make him a good coach.
BCCI were supposed to consult with India Test captain Virat Kohli, under whom India are supposed to play 17 Test matches starting from July, before taking the final call.
Kohli was happy to see Kumble on board as the new Indian cricket team coach. He welcomed Kumble on Twitter as well.
"Heartiest welcome to @anilkumble1074 Sir. Look forward to your tenure with us. Great things in store for Indian Cricket with you," Kohli had posted on his official Twitter account on Thursday after Kumble was appointed as the head coach of Team India.
India will embark on a journey for the Caribbean Islands in July, where they will be playing four Test matches. This will be Kumble's first assignment as the head coach of India. It will be interesting to see how India performs during this tour of West Indies. India will also play a number of home series later this year.
India ODI and T20 skipper MS Dhoni is yet to express his feelings on this decision as he too will work closely with Kumble during the ODI and T20 matches in the next calendar year.
