Football fans, who were critical of Christian Benteke's £32.5 million price tag, were silenced, for the moment at least, as the Belgian scored a wonderful goal from long distance, which helped Liverpool defeat Swindon Town 2-1 at the County Ground on Sunday.
Despite not fielding a strong team against Swindon Town, Liverpool, after having played against HJK Helsinki on Saturday, looked settled with players such as Lucas Leiva, Lazar Markovic, Alberto Moreno, amongst others, putting up a decent performance.
It was through Benteke's early goal in the second half that Liverpool took the lead, but it was soon cancelled out with Swindon Town's Jonathan Obika scoring in the 63rd minute of the game. A late goal from Sheyi Ojo helped Brendan Rodgers' men secure victory.
Benteke could have easily got onto the scoresheet early on, but missed his chances during the first half. It was not only Benteke , who made his Liverpool debut, but also Roberto Firmino with the duo linking well to impress Liverpool fans.
Benteke's first appearance for Liverpool was praised by Brendan Rodgers.
"He got a wonderful goal and considering he's only been back in training a week he looked really good," Mirror quoted Rodgers as saying.
"Whether it's a pre-season game or a league or cup game, you won't see too many better than that. I was really impressed with him.
"For me, he's absolutely perfect in terms of how we work. I think he'll show that he's got the capacity to add something else to our game, which is that aerial threat."
The game against Swindon Town marked the end of the preseason fixtures for Liverpool as they maintained their unbeaten streak ahead of their EPL game against Stoke City at Britannia Stadium on Sunday.
