Ajith's "Vedalam" has continued its good run at the box office. The Tamil movie has earned above Rs 106 crore by the end of its 11-day first week.
"Vedalam" was released to mammoth expectations on 10 November for the Diwali festival. The movie got mixed reviews but made record-breaking business. Indeed, it has become the biggest opener of all time in Kollywood by earning Rs 15.5 crore on the release day.
Many expected "Vedalam" to slow down due to mixed reviews by the critics. But the reviews seem like had little impact on the audience as it continued to pull the audience throughout the first weekend. In the opening weekend, it minted Rs 78.15 crore worldwide.
In the next three days, "Vedalam" crossed the 100-crore mark. Now, by the end of its first week (11 days), the collection has crossed above Rs 106 crore. The official report on the first week collection is awaited.
The success of "Vedalam" has stunned the industry as people have continued to watch despite Chennai and a few other districts heavily hit by the unprecedented rain. This has clearly shown again that Ajith has a good market and commends good fan following.
The response for "Vedalam" has been good in neighbouring states like Karnataka and Kerala from where the film has earned about Rs 10 crore. In the overseas centres, the film is doing well in Malaysia, UK and a few other regions. But in the US, Kamal Haasan's "Thoongavanam" has overpowered the Ajith starrer.
"Vedalam" is expected to do well for a few more weeks due to the good word-of-mouth from the audience. More importantly, we have to wait and see whether the movie sets a benchmark at Tamil Nadu box office.
So far, it has earned above Rs 60 crore and it has to be seen whether it would collect Rs 100 crore alone in the state.
