Ajith starrer "Vedalam" is heading towards the end of its business in Chennai. The movie is also inches away from becoming the third biggest box office hit in the city.
By the end of its sixth weekend, "Vedalam" has minted Rs 6.62 crore at Chennai box office. In the last weekend, the film had only six shows from which it earned over Rs 56,000. The Ajith starrer were replaced by new flicks including Dhanush's "Thanga Magan".
"Vedalam" still needs Rs 5 lakh to break Jayam Ravi's "Thani Oruvan" record of Rs 6.67 crore and to become the third highest-grossing movie of the year in Chennai. Shankar's "I" is in the top position with Rs 9.70 crore as its lifetime figures, followed by SS Rajamouli's magnum opus "Baahubali", which collected above Rs 8 crore.

In the opening weekend, whcih extended for six days, "Vedalam" earned Rs 3.23 crore from 348 shows. The stunning opening gave traders high hopes on the film and people expected the film to set new benchmarks.
But the unprecedented rain played spoilsport to some extent in its second week. Yet it minted Rs 1.90 crore. The movie raked in close to Rs 1.15 crore in its third week but in the fourth week Chennai witnessed massive floods due to which the collection dropped drastically. It raked in over Rs 20 lakh in its fifth week. The movie could have done a lot better if it had not been affected by heavy rain and flood, say traders.
Nonetheless, "Vedalam" has turned out to be the highest-grossing film of Ajith till date. The film has become a profitable venture for the distributors, exhibitors and producer.
"Vedalam" is produced by AM Rathnam and directed by Siruthai Siva. Ajith, Shruthi Haasan and Lakshmi Menon are in the lead roles.
