Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) bid goodbye to her friends and family in the season 6 finale of "The Vampire Diaries" and it was assumed that the show was done putting her life in danger.
But because Elena is one of the central characters of the show, she is still an integral part of the story and an upcoming episode will see someone trying to hurt her.
The season 6 finale saw Kai casting a sleeping spell on Elena and linking her life with Bonnie's in such a way that Elena will not wake up as long as Bonnie lived. Following this, Elena's body was placed in a coffin and stored away in the Salvatore family's crypt, ensuring that no harm would come to her.
But that's all set to change. According to Paul Wesley, an upcoming episode will see Damon (Ian Somerhalder) trying to keep his ladylove safe from external threats.
"Elena's still a very big part of the story," Wesley told TV Insider. "Her body's in danger in the first few episodes, and Damon is doing everything he can to make sure it stays safe if and when she wakes up."
So who is after Elena's body? One suspect is Lily Salvatore. The premiere episode saw Damon killing Lily's favourite Heretic, Malcolm, and it's a foregone conclusion that Mama Salvatore is going to retaliate. The perfect way to seek revenge would be by hitting Damon where it hurts the most, and right now Elena is Damon's most vulnerable asset.
Another person who might have something to gain by hurting Elena is the mystery woman who was introduced towards the end of the season 7 premiere episode.
At this point not much is known about the woman, but speculations are rife that the arrow wielding woman could be Caroline. However, fans have failed to come up with a possible reason for Caroline to hurt Elena or the Salvatore brothers.
"The Vampire Diaries" is aired Thursdays on CW.
