When "The Vampire Diaires" returns on Oct. 2 for its sixth season, viewers will see Stefan seeking comfort from an unlikely source to deal with the grief of his brother's death.
In the past, Caroline and Elena have always been successful in cheering up Stefan whenever he is feeling down. However, this time they too are unable to cope up with Damon's death, and a Wetpaint report suggests that Stefan finds comfort in Enzo.
The Wetpaint report zeroed in on Enzo, after it was revealed that Michael Malarkey will be a series regular in season six.
As viewers of the vampire series would know, Enzo is Damon's only friend, and despite the two having a falling out in the previous season, Enzo will be equally devastated over Damon's death, reports indicate.
Enzo's desire to avenge the death of Maggie gets him killed by Stefan in a cruel twist of fate, which manages to cause a friction between the Salvatore brothers. Since his death, Enzo was shown as the bad guy all the way through the finale, and reportedly, Ian Somerhalder threatened to quit the show if Enzo wasn't brought back.
"Ian pulled me aside one day and he goes, 'If you kill Enzo, I'm going to quit,'" executive producer Caroline Dries told The Hollywood Reporter back in April. "We purposefully had him show up at the end as a ghost to imply that his story isn't over. He is going to become a ghost villain moving forward. We'll see him all the way through to the finale as the bad guy."
Season six will see Stefan struggling to get past the guilt of Damon's death, as his brother went on the suicide mission to save him from the Other Side, but gets trapped in it before being sucked into oblivion.
Meanwhile, the Caroline and Stefan relationship is also expected to move forward in the upcoming season.
"Caroline's got a little crush/feeling for someone that's going to creep up to the surface and cause a potential rift between her and one of her friends. So she's like, 'I'm going to push that down.'" But moving into Season 6, Dries teases, "We're going to see [Caroline] set her sights on [said crush] and try to make a move," Dries said.
Dries teased about this during an interview with TVLine, and although she did not take names, fans were soon to conclude that the executive producer was talking about Caroline and Stefan.
