'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6: Ian Somerhalder Talks Damon-Bonnie Relationship

"The Vampire Diaries" actor Ian Somerhalder made his directorial debut with the 12 March episode "The Downward Spiral" that saw the characters, Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Caroline (Candice Accola), emerging as strong, powerful characters.

Bonnie appears to be done giving up her life for others, and Caroline decided to embrace her evil side by switching off her humanity switch, and blackmailing Stefan to doing the same thing. But things won't go the way Caroline planned, as the next episode titled, "A Bird in a Gilded Cage" will see the two turning on each other.

"When Caroline's plan for Stefan backfires, she is left to pick up the pieces," reads the official synopsis of the episode. "Elsewhere, back at Whitmore College, Enzo and Alaric's attempt to reel Caroline back in doesn't quite go as planned when they realize they're outmaneuvered."

The episode will also see Damon and Elena, with some help from Bonnie and Kai, taking a trip to the prison world to rescue Lily Salvatore, Damon and Stefan's ripper mother. The synopsis also teases that an "unexpected gift from Bonnie leaves Damon shaken to his core."

Bonnie and Damon's chemistry in the last few episodes has fans rooting for them to get together, and actor Somerhalder recently thanked their acting coach, Ivana Chubbuck, for helping them develop such a sizzling chemistry.

"Kat and I actually have amazing chemistry on set, and on the show, because we work with the same acting coach," Somerhalder told MTV. "This woman Ivana Chubbuck… Kat and I get to work with Ivana separately, and then we get to work on our own as individuals, and then together as a team. So there's a lot of weird, awesome, secret communication between Kat and I as actors."

Disappointing fans, the actor also hinted there was no scope for Damon and Bonnie becoming a couple.

"Probably one of the reasons why you don't see Bonnie and Damon together very much is because I don't think that the powers that be want there to be much of a Damon and Bonnie storyline, or chemistry, because then it takes away from what I guess is supposed to be, or what people think is supposed to be, which is this whole Damon and Elena thing," Somerhalder said.
