Nina Dobrev's character Elena Gilbert finally bid goodbye to The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" on Thursday.
The final episode of the season entitled "I am Thinking of You All the While" ended with Kai putting a spell on Elena thereby linking her to Bonnie. The spell works in such a way that as long as Bonnie lived, Elena would remain in a sleep-mode. And if the witch tries to find a loophole to get out of this spell, both Elena and Bonnie would die.
Elsewhere on the show, we saw Alaric yet again losing someone he loves. Jo and his twins died, and Liv, who was sure to die now that Kai was dead, convinced Tyler to kill her and trigger his werewolf gene, and heal himself.
As for Stefan and Caroline, the episode finally saw the youngest Salvatore brother professing his love for the blonde vampire, after confessing that he and Elena were never meant to be together.
"We loved each other, but she was also the only person I've ever met who believed my brother was worth loving," he told Caroline. "Her faith in him brought me and Damon back together. … I loved her more than I ever thought I could love somebody else, but I think in the end, I needed him more than I needed her."
The episode ended with a time jump that saw a devastated Damon (Ian Somerhalder) struggling to move on without Elena.
Even though Elena will no longer be a part of the show, Chris Wood, the actor who essayed the evil Kai, told Us Weekly that the show is going to move forward just fine without the actress.
"They'll be just fine, and the show, I think, will also be more than fine. It's a healthy shake-up," he explained. "You get rid of the necessity of telling the Elena story as the main priority -- that changing is automatically going to shift the way stories are told."
Besides Dobrev, season 6 was the last for Michael Trevino, too, as a series regular. Although we wouldn't be seeing Elena back on the show, showrunner Julie Plec revealed that fans can expect Trevino to make an appearance sometime in season 7.
Here are a few fan reaction's to how Elena exited the show.
