Filming of the sixth season of "The Vampire Diaries" has commenced and on Thursday Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon, thanked his fans for their love and support in a post along with a picture of his pet cat.

"Being a Dad…" Somerhalder captioned the photo. "Morning vet visit with moke before heading to my 1st Day of work for SEASON 6 of The Vampire Diaries! Wow, how did this happen??? I'll tell you how: you all are the greatest audience on the planet! Thank you for all of your love and support over these years- none of this could possible with out you!"

A few hours later, Nina Dobrev too posted a picture of her cat on her social networking page, calling the feline her "true love."

"So happy to be home with my love #lynxlove #truelove #unconditionallove," Dobrev wrote.

In his Instagram post, Somerhalder also promised to meet his fans at the San Diego Comic Con, where he will be joined by co-stars Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Kat Graham along with executive producer Julie Plec.

The San Diego convention will feature a special "The Vampire Diaries" video screening and a Q&A session, where fans are sure to question the stars on what happens to Damon and Bonnie as they get trapped in the Other Side as it obliterates.

It has already been stated that the actors do not die, as both Graham and Somerhalder are contracted through season six. But theories floating around suggest everything from them forgetting their past and continuing with a new life, to time travel and existing in another plane.

Season six will pick up after a substantial time jump and fans will see that most of their beloved characters have moved on from the events of the season five finale. However, that does not mean that Damon and Bonnie are forgotten.

"There's a substantial time jump which we're excited about," said Julie Plec, according to Wetpaint. "It gives us the opportunity to find these people again with enough time having passed that the grief has settled into a reality that is making them either actively move forward with their lives, spiral to a different place or make really bold and rash decisions in how they're going to live their lives without these people in them."
