Fans of The Vampire Diaries have been rooting for a Delena reunion ever since it was announced that the show will end with Season 8. But it looks like Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore, does not want his character to end up with Nina Dobrev's Elena.
"This poor young girl from this tiny town…she lost everyone she's ever loved, she burned her house down, she's now in a box," Somerhalder told TVLine. "These guys have ruined her life, yet everybody wants her to end up with one of them."
Dobrev quit the show after Season 6, but the writers of the show decided against killing off her character. Elena was put in a magic-induced sleep and her life was linked to Kat Graham's Bonnie's in such a way that Elena will not wake up as long as Bonnie lived.
At the San Diego comic-con, executive producer Julie Plec hinted at the possibility of Dobrev's return saying she made a promise to come back and wind up Elena's character. "Not to put too much pressure on anything Nina Dobrev..but a promise was made," Plec said at the time. "An emotional promise that I'd like to see come to life. You heard it here…there's been friendship promises made, and now we'll see if we can deliver on them."
While Plec wants Dobrev to return, Somerhalder has been less enthusiastic, maybe because it would be awkward for him to share intimate scenes with his ex, now that he is married. Dobrev and Somerhalder dated for about three years before calling it quits in mid-2013.
It is also being said that Somerhalder's wife Nikki Reed isn't too happy at the possibility of Dobrev returning.
