In a viral video that is doing rounds on social media, Vadodara BJP president Satish Patel is seen showering currency notes over Gujarati singer Kirtidan Gadhvi at an event held in the city on 20 September.
The cultural programme, which was also attended by BJP State general secretary Shabdsharan Brahmbhatt, was reportedly organised by Gujarat's pastoral communities including Rabadi and Bharwad.
Patel said that the money is spent for a "good cause" as it will be donated to a panjrapole (animal infirmary) for cattle welfare, said reports.
"The event was part of a cultural programme known as 'gher' in Gujarati, in which, events are organised to collect donation from audiences, which is then used for certain good causes. At the September 20 event, money was collected as donation for cow protection. This is a Gujarati tradition widely prevalent in Saurashtra region," The Indian Express quoted the local leader as saying.
"Gadhvi is an internationally known Gujarati singer and my close relative. He will fly to the US in some time where people will most likely shower dollar currency on him," he added.
Patel added that most of the currency notes were in the denomination of 10 and that it would amount to about Rs three lakh.
