Two of the top men singles contenders – Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic -- for the US Open will be in action for their respective fourth round matches on Sunday. If both the players win their match, chances of Nadal vs Djokovic semifinals increase.
But, Nadal and Djokovic cannot afford to take it easy in the fourth round as their opponents come into this match with impressive wins. Nadal faces Lucas Pouille while Djokovic is up against Kyle Edmund.
Here is a look at both the matches
Rafael Nadal vs Lucas Pouille
Nadal might not have been impressive this season, also partly owing due to injuries, but the Spaniard has looked good in the US Open so far. The former world number one has not dropped a single set in the competition, which will help him play confidently against the 24th seeded French player. In fact, this might be the biggest test for Nadal, as Pouille is the first seeded player he will face in this competition.
Pouille has set up a date with France after some wonderful display of tennis against Roberto Bautista Agu of Spain. It was a brilliant match, which the Frenchman won in five sets. With such victory, Pouille will come into this match confident.
Nadal may not be the player, who used to dominate matches, but the player has still not lost his touch. The Spaniard has already produced some amazing moments in the court, with the crowd cheering him on. Nadal, if he gets his A game going, should reach the quarterfinals.
Novak Djokovic vs Kyle Edmund
The top seed has not even broken sweat in his last two matches. Second round opponent Jiri Veseley withdrew from the competition due to left forearm inflammation few hours before the clash. The story did not change much for the Serbain in third round as Mikhail Youzhny retired in the first set itself to reach the fourth round.
Djokovic will meet Edmund in the prequarters, and the latter has been in terrific form in the US Open right from the first match. The Great Britain player stunned 13th seed Richard Gasquet in the first round, and emerged victorious against John Isner in the third round. With such brilliant wins under his belt, he will hope to give his best against the world number one on Sunday.
The Serbian, after a poor Wimbledon and Rio Olympics, is keen to win the last Grand Slam of the year. This match against Edmund could be a tricky affair for Djokovic, who has not had much match practice in the competition.
