Roger Federer is set to face 17th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the fourth round of the US Open, while Grigor Dimitrov will play Gael Monfils at the Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.
Five-time US Open champion Federer reached the fourth round after defeating Marcel Granollers of Spain 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. The Swiss maestro was down 2-5 in the first set before it started to pour. However, he won 20 of the next 24 games to seal the victory in one hour and 58 minutes and set up a clash with Agut.
"I enjoyed it. I thought it was a good match and I'm happy I was able to come back and turn it around. Marcel started really on fire. The break helped me and I came out and played some great tennis," the 33-year-old pointed out.
Federer is playing Agut for the first time on the professional tour. The Spaniard had defeated Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the fourth round.
However, 17-time major winner is not underestimating his opponent.
"I think he's done extremely well. Didn't he win three different tournaments on three different surfaces this year? He's quick on his feet. He doesn't miss much. He's consistent. He's got a pretty good first serve. He's overall a solid player," Federer said.
"He comes from the Spanish tennis school, which they just know how to train hard. They never get tired. They're always ready to go. He plays unbelievably flat actually, which is very surprising for a Spaniard. But I'm looking forward to the match."
Meanwhile, in another encounter, Dimitrov and Monfils will lock horns to seal a spot in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Dimitrov stormed past David Goffin 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 to set up the clash against Monfils. The seventh seed lost the first set but recovered quickly to win the next three sets to close out the match in under 2 hours and 20 minutes.
"He played a great, great first set," said Dimitrov. "Whatever I was trying to do was just not enough. He was taking every ball on the rise, penetrating through the court, coming in, volleys. His game was just too good in the first set.
"But I didn't let go of my belief, especially coming into that second set. I knew that my serve was not working the way I wanted it to, so I knew I was going to struggle a little bit.
The Bulgarian is meeting Monfils for the third time on the professional tour. This is their first meeting at the US Open after 2011, where Monfils clinched victory in straight sets. However, Dimitrov squared his loss earlier this year in Bucharest to bring the head-to-head record to 1-1.
On being asked about the upcoming match, Monfils said he anticipated a tough battle against the Bulgarian.
"Well, it's going to be a tough one," said Monfils. "He's definitely the favourite. It's the first time we switched. He's the favourite, Top 10, solid. I think he's very talented. He can hit every shot. But I think he has great defence. It's going to be interesting for me to try to play my game, be aggressive and we'll see how it's going to be."
