Visitors to American Centers in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata will no longer be allowed to bring laptop, computers or tablets, the US embassy said on Thursday.
Earlier, mobile phones and laptops were allowed, but photography was prohibited.
According to the US embassy, the prohibition applies to all models of laptops and tablets, including Netbooks, Chromebooks, iPads, Kindles, and MacBooks.
"None of the American Centers will be able to store visitors' devices. Cellular phones and smartphones are permitted," the embassy said.
The American Center in Chennai already has restrictions in place that prohibit all forms of electronic devices, including phones. The policy in Chennai has not changed.
In March, the Donald Trump administration had banned electronic devices like iPads and laptops from cabin luggage on direct flights to the US from at least eight Middle Eastern and North African countries.
Media reports had stated that intelligence gathered overseas sparked the US order. The names of the countries affected have not been confirmed yet.
The ban was imposed on electronic devices larger than a smartphone, like laptops, tablets, cameras, electronic games and DVD players.
