Campaigning for the third phase of elections in Uttar Pradesh came to an end at 5 p.m. Monday.
Elections will be held in 56 assembly constituencies in eastern UP and Vindhyachal in the third phase of polls Wednesday. A total of 1 crore 79 lakh electorates are there in these constituencies.
BJP top leaders and star campaigners L K Advani and Shatrughan Sinha held election rallies in Varanasi and Mirzapur while party leaders Vinay Katiyar, Uma Bharati and former president Rajnath Singh held rallies in Jaunpur and Sultanpur.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi addressed a rally in Jaunpur.
Janata Dal (United) chief Sharad Yadav, Samajwadi Party state president Akhilesh Yadav, Rashtriya Lok Manch president Amar Singh and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders also campaigned in the areas for their party candidates.
The BSP had a lion's share of 30 seats in this area during 2007 assembly elections.
A total of 1,018 candidates are in the fray. Former state assembly speaker Kesri Nath Tripathi, state government ministers Nand Gopal Gupta and Indrajeet Saroj and Samajwadi Party leader Rajendra Prasad Pandey are some of the prominent leaders who are contesting in the third phase of elections.
