American two-wheeler manufacturer UM Motorcycles entered India this year with the launch of the Renegade Commando and Renegade Sport S cruisers at the Auto Expo in February. The company already has over 3,000 bookings for its cruiser and deliveries are yet to start. The positive response seems to have prompted the company to expand its product range in the coming years.
The most important addition next year will be an affordable cruiser that will compete against Bajaj Avenger range, reported Autocar India. The Bajaj cruiser range is recording massive sales at present and there are no rivals. This seems to have prompted UM Motorcycles to think. The Renegade Commando and Sport S are priced around Rs. 1.5 lakh. Hence, the new cruiser will be priced around Rs 1 lakh. It is also expected to use 220cc single-cylinder that develops 20bhp from UM's international range.
The report also says UM Motorcycles will also enter the scooter segment in India. UM Motorcycles currently sells three scooter models – Flash (110cc), Powermax (125cc) and Matrix (150cc) – in global markets. The last two are the possible products for India. The arrival of UM scooters are expected only in 2019, since the company is currently concentrating on cruiser range only.
The immediate addition to the motorcycle range will be the Renegade Classic that has been showcased at the Auto Expo. Powered by the same 280cc single-cylinder water cooled engine that also powers other Renegade models, the Classic will have the power of 25bhp at 8,500rpm and 21.8Nm of torque at 7,000rpm, teamed with six-speed transmission. The launch of the Renegade Classic is expected by 2016-end.
