Tamil actor Kamal Haasan turned 57 on Monday (Nov. 7). The Ulaganayagan, as the actor is known as, is a multifaceted personality. In addition to acting, he directs movies, writes scripts and lyrics, sings and even choreographs dances.
Kamal made his debut in A. Bhimsingh's movie "Kalathur Kannamma" (1959) as a child artiste. He has acted in 169 films and directed three movies. "Apoorva Raagangal"(1975), "Maro Charitra" (1978), "Ek Duuje Ke Liye" (1981), "Moondram Pirai" (1982), "Saagar" (1985), "Swathi Muthyam"(1986), "Nayagan"(1987), "Thevar Magan"(1992), "Kuruthipunal"(1995), "Indian"(1996), "Hey Ram"(2000), "Virumaandi"(2004) "Dasavathaaram" (2008) are some of his notable and critically acclaimed films.
Though the actor is mainly associated with the Tamil film industry, yet he has acted in Bollywood and in other regional language movies too.
In addition to winning the coveted Padmashree instituted by the Government of India, he has won four national awards, 18 Filmfare awards, Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award for Excellence in Indian Cinema (2006) and Living Legend Award by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (2007).
Kamal is a philanthropic who converted his fan club into a welfare association.
