London has been put on high alert once again as the British police on Friday warned that they were witnessing an "increased level of terrorist activity." The statement from the officials came a day after a man with knives was arrested near the United Kingdom (UK) parliament, and a woman was shot in a different police raid.
London was put on high alert earlier this month, after an assailant attempted to attack the houses of parliament, and killed five people. The authorities in Britain are being extra cautious in wake of upcoming general elections on June 8.
The attacker, Khalid Masood, drove a car through pedestrians on Westminster Bridge earlier in April before crashing into the gates of parliament. Mansood ran inside and killed a policeman with a knife.
"Yesterday was an extraordinary day in London," Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said. The official confirmed of six terror-associated arrests overnight.
"I wanted to reassure the public that this increased level of terrorist activity is being matched by our action... We are making arrests on a near daily basis," Bas was quoted as saying by News 24.
A 27-year-old man, in possession of knives, was taken into custody by police after he was caught walking near the UK parliament. His arrest was made on suspicion of terrorism offence, an investigation into the case is ongoing, police confirmed.
Reports state that just few hours after the man's arrest, armed police raided a property in north London as part of an unrelated counter-terrorism investigation. A woman in her 20s was reportedly shot during the raid. She was rushed to the hospital later, where she is reportedly in a serious condition.
Six people have been arrested till now as part of the terrorism investigations. The injured woman is also one of the suspects.
"Due to these arrests that have been made yesterday, in both cases I believe we have contained the threats that they posed," Basu said.
