The UK driving test turns 80 this year, with a Mr Beene of Kensington paying 37p to be the first person to pass their driving test back in 1935.

80 years on and a lot has changed on British roads. In the video animation here, Britains road history is charted through the decades. Back when the driving test was first introduced, there were around 2 million vehicles on Britains roads. Now in 2015, there are more than 27 million vehicles on the roads.

The video animation has been released by Saga Motor Insurance to coincide with their new report on the driving habits of the over 50s. They found that the age group accounted for nearly half of all motor transport spending, £42.4 billion in 2014, and clocking up 7,270 miles a year.
