Former El Salvador international Alfredo Pacheco was shot dead by an unknown gunman at a petrol station at night in San Salvador on Sunday, 27 December.
Pacheco, till date, remains the highest capped player of the El Salvador national football team, with 86 games.
Police officials in El Salvador have confirmed that the former footballer, who was banned for life for match-fixing in 2013, was with a group of friends at the petrol station in the city of Santa Ana when the unknown assailant opened fire on the group.
"The attorney general's office in Santa Ana processed the crime scene of the murder of Alfredo Pacheco at 3.30 am in a petrol station," the Salvadorian attorney general's office said in a statement.
Pacheco's friends were taken to a nearby hospital.
It was only this month that another footballer, Arnold Peralta, of Honduras, was shot dead by unknown assailants in the port city of La Ceiba.
