In what looks like a double suicide, a pregnant doctor and her brother-in-law, both 34, were found dead in an apartment in Bu Kuwara on Saturday night (August 11).
The two doctors have been identified as Ibrahim Ravuthar, a resident of Kollam in south Kerala and Shamlina Muhammed Salim, who is from Pathanamthitta, a southern district of the state. The reason behind the alleged suicide is yet unclear.
The two worked as anaesthetists at the same hospital, according to reports in an English news outlet from Kerala.
The suicide came to light when Ravuthar's wife visited the apartment and nobody opened the door.
"Dr Ibrahim was living with his wife and son in an apartment on the ground floor, but as of late the wife and child were not seen around," a source told Gulf Daily News.
"That night, I understand that Dr Ibrahim's wife had visited and he was not opening the door so she alerted the police. The police opened the apartment door to find two dead bodies and they removed them by around 2am," the source added.
A report in a local news website has said that the doctor was eight months pregnant and that she was the wife of Ravuthar's brother.
Reports have said that the two had not attended work for three days. While it is being speculated that the duo died due to an overdose of some medicine, the police are yet to ascertain the cause of their death.
Dr. Salim is survived by her husband, who is a maxillofacial surgeon at the same hospital and a seven-year-old daughter. The police are currently investigating the case and are also questioning Salim's husband.
Her father is also a doctor at a private hospital in Bahrain.
