Going into the final day of the fifth Test match between India and England, only two results were possible – draw or India win – in Chennai, with the visitors trailing Virat Kohli's side by 270 runs. India were on the lookout for 10 wickets on the final day, and they managed to do so, with Ravindra Jadeja being the pick of the bowlers, scalping seven England wickets, helping India win the match by an innings and 75 runs.
With this result, India have clinched the Test series 4-0. After the first Test ended in a draw, India outplayed England in all departments of the game to win the last four Test matches.
The English openers — Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings — who held onto their wickets in the final few overs of Day 4, started well on the fifth day, as they were looking to draw the match. They provided a solid start with a century stand, but Cook lost his wicket for 49 runs, and Jennings followed suit with Jadeja dismissing both the players in a space of four overs. Their score then read 110 for two wickets.
After both the openers were back in the pavilion, India were in desperate need to take the wicket of Joe Root, who is England's best batsman in the series, and Jadeja once again delivered as he trapped the right-hander leg-before. The umpire gave not out, but Kohli used DRS to get the decision in their favour.
From there on, Moeen Ali played some wonderful cricket, but did not receive solid support at the other end. England were losing wickets at regular intervals, and reached 200 for the loss of eight wickets from a good position. The England batsmen could not brush off the pressure from India spinners, including Jadeja, R Ashwin and Amit Mishra, especially with fielders placed in catching position around the bat.
India had to take the last two English wickets, with a little more than an hour left for the closing time, for the series to come to an end. Jadeja did not take much time to dismiss the tailenders to help India finish the series in style, and took a lap of honour in Chennai after the match.
