Barcelona's talismanic forward Lionel Messi won the prestigious FIFA Ballon d'Or award for the fifth time in the last eight years on Monday in Zurich. Twitter reacted after the Argentine won the celebrated award.
Messi has been a sensational footballer and arguably the best in this planet. Many may disagree with this fact and say it is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has also won the Ballon d'Or thrice since its inception. But let us face the fact -- almost everybody predicted that Messi will clinch the award for his extraordinary feats achieved in the first half of 2015.
When Barney Ronay wrote about Messi for The Guardian, he referred to the latter as a "genius and and antidote to football's bloated excesses." Is that not quite apt? Of course it is.
But the comparison between Messi and Ronaldo is simply not needed to be drawn at this point of time. They are two of the bests in their own way. Although there are a number of extraordinary talents in world of football at this moment, just imagine how big a hole will there be when Messi and Ronaldo retire from the game. All we can do right now is congratulate Messi on his outstanding achievements and hope for more brilliance from the God-gifted Argentine.
Let us have a look at some of the tweets from the fans after Messi grabbed his fifth Ballon d'Or award:
