Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Kerala for the first time after assuming office in 2014, addressed BJP activists in Thrissur on Monday, 14 December. The meeting was said to be a curtain raiser for next year's assembly polls.
However, things went slightly wrong after Modi's speech in Hindi was translated by BJP's Kerala State General Secretary K Surendran.
Surendran made errors while translating the PM's speech and even missed out key points of the speech. At one point, after failing to follow the speech, he even said "I can't hear" and was soon replaced by party's state president V Muraleedharan, who did the job really well by translating the speech from the beginning.
Meanwhile, social media users were quick to attack Surendran for his Hindi "knowledge" and Congress MLA VT Balram posted a photo of Hindi alphabets as a reply to the BJP leader after their previous cyber war when Surendran had asked Balram to learn Hindi.
"Language is a mode to communicate. Proficiency in any language or the lack of it does not say anything about a person. From the Srimathi Teacher incident to the K.Surendran incident we Malayalees are exposing a weird complex we all inherit from where I do not know. Trolling and mud slinging on such low levels will only take out the importance of what we are actually looking at achieving. Peace," Malayalam actress Rima Kallingal posted on her Facebook page responding to the troll messages on social media.
Meanwhile, upon Modi's arrival at the Naval airport in a special India Air Force aircraft on Monday, he was received by Kerala Governor P Sathasivam, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Ernakulam Lok Sabha member KV Thomas, legislator Hibi Eden, Kochi mayor Soumini Jain and other officials.
On Tuesday, Modi's programmes include addressing the naval combined commanders' conference on INS Vikramaditya, following which he will fly down to Kollam to attend three functions.
The PM will unveil a statue of R Shankar, the former chief minister and Congress president, and also inaugurate a new building at SN College in Kollam. He will also visit the house Sree Narayana Guru at Varkala, and will meet seers at Sree Narayana Mutt.
Before departing to New Delhi from the Thiruvananthapuram airport, Modi will also meet the Chandy cabinet.
