A woman in Toronto, Canada, has been charged with criminal mischief after she gave water to pigs being transported to a slaughterhouse on a hot day. Anita Kranjc, 48, could face up to 10 years in prison for her actions.
Kranjc is a co-founder of the Canadian animal rights group Toronto Pig Save, whose members wait at traffic lights on hot days to give water to pigs being transported. On 22 June, Kranjc was taking part in such an action when the driver of the transport vehicle confronted her. This confrontation was filmed by a fellow activist and can be seen above.
In the video, Krancj is heard saying: Jesus said, if they are thirsty, give them water, to which the driver replies: You know what? These are not humans, you dumb frickin broad. At one point the driver threatens to slap the water bottle out of Krancjs hands, and she says: If you want assault charges, go ahead.
Eric Van Boekel, the owner of the farm where the pigs were raised, told the Toronto Star that he would go to the full extent of the law to stop the animal rights campaigners. If youre driving down the road and you have your window down and you come to an intersection and I feel you need some water or a drink, how would you feel if I stick my hands in your personal space, he said.
Krancj has stayed unapologetic and said she would rather go to prison than pay a possible fine.
