Top 10 selling cars in FY17: Maruti Suzuki raises bar; Alto is best-selling car for 13th year

Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest car-maker continues to reign supreme in the Indian automobile market with seven of its models making it to the top-selling passenger vehicle list in the financial year 2016-2017. The company continued to cement its position with its models Alto, WagonR, Swift and Swift Dzire taking the first four positions.

According to the data made available by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Maruti's Alto retained its numero uno position for the 13th year in a row, selling 2,41,635 units as against 2,63,422 units in the FY 2015-16. However, Alto also recorded a decline of 8.27 percent in the FY 2017.

In the second position, Maruti's tall-boy hatchback, Wagon R rolled up sales of 1,72,346 units as opposed to 1,69,555 units in the FY-16 and records 1.64 percent growth. Swift Dzire and Swift settled for third and fourth positions, respectively, while Hyundai's Grand i10 rounded off the top five drivers.

Maruti sold 1,67,266 units of Swift Dzire in the FY-2017 when compared to 1,95,939 units a year ago. The compact sedan was pushed to the third slot with de-growth of 14.63 percent. The company's popular hatchback, Swift, dropped to fourth position at 1,66,885 units from the previous year's third slot at 1,95,043 units. Hyundai's Grand i10 recorded 1,46,228 units of sales in 2016-17. In the sixth position was Hyundai's Elite i20 with 1,26,304 units.

Suzuki Baleno, the premium hatchback of Maruri had sales of 1,20,804 units, helping it settle for the seventh spot. Closing in were Vitara Brezza and Celerio that took 9th and 10th positions with sales of 1,08,640 units and 97,361 units in the last FY, respectively. French car-maker Renault's Kwid, the car that revived the company's fortune in the Indian market was in the eighth position with sales of 1,09,341 units.
