The Tiago hatchback that was launched in April has turned out to be a saviour for Tata Motors. After continuously witnessing sliding sales figures over two years, the carmaker has finally registered positive sales in the first quarter of FY17.
With increased sales, Tata Motors regained the third position in the passenger cars segment, behind Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, reports the Hindu BusinessLine. A decline in sales of Honda in the first quarter of FY17 also has helped Tata Motors to better its position. Total car sales of Tata stood at 28,598 units in Q1 of FY17 as against 26,617 units in the same period last fiscal. It is clear that the surge in sales has been driven by the Tiago that finds an average of 3,000 takers every month.
The Tiago is the first car to bear the new Impact design language of Tata Motors. The company has focused on design aspects in the Tiago. The hatchback is one of the most well-proportioned and good-looking Tata vehicles that one has seen in the recent past. Complemented by new powertrains and an aggressive price that starts at Rs. 3.20 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi, the small car has received phenomenal response with bookings over 22,000. Tiago registered a sale of 3,022 units in the launch month and 3,287 units in May. In June, 4,205 units were sold, making the Tiago the first model in Tata's stable to exceed the monthly sales figure of 4,000 units in the past two years.
Riding on the Tiago, Tata Motors posted 100 percent growth in the hatchback segment in June. According to reports, the company is planning to increase the production of the Tiago at its Sanand plant in Gujarat, which had rolled out 10,000 units in June.
The Tiago is sold in both petrol and diesel engine models. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron petrol mill churns out 83.8bhp of power at 6,000rpm and 114Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, while the 1.05-litre three-cylinder Revotorq diesel engine produces 69bhp of power at 4,000rpm and 140Nm of torque at 1,800-3,000rpm. Both the engines come mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The hatchback was launched with the claimed fuel efficiency of 23.8kmpl for petrol and 27.28kmpl for diesel versions.
