Ilayathalapathy Vijay's "Theri" has created a history at the North American box office. The Tamil movie has reached the $1-million club in this part of the world on Thursday, April 21.
"Congratulations @actorvijay on joining $1M club for North America. 5th Tamil film to gross over $1M officially #Theri," Atmus Entertainment tweeted. This is the first movie of Vijay to have officially joined the club.
Atmus Entertainment further adds, "#Kaththi Canada numbers not reported, if reported that would have been first MillionDollar North America gross for Vijay.. If at all we can get Canada numbers reported properly, we would have had many other Tamil films as $1M North America. [sic]"
Till Wednesday, the Tamil film has earned $992,028 in this region, as per Midwest Movies. It only required $8,000 to reach this mark. Many had expected "Theri" to reach the $1-million mark on Wednesday itself after looking at its consistent performance in North America since its release.
"Theri" was opened in North America with premiere shows on April 13. The movie got a flying start as it minted $251,123 from the special shows. It also became the third highest grosser from the U.S. premiere shows after Rajinikanth's films like "Lingaa" ($404,566) and "Endhiran" ($260,000) in this region.
The collection saw a drop in the following day and earned over $130,000. However, the business remained solid in the next two days as it ended its first weekend at $924,531 with the movie minting $ 643,353 in the U.S. and $ 281,178 in Canada.
"Theri" made decent business on Monday and Tuesday to take its total collection to $978,135. On Wednesday, it reportedly earned $13,937 to take its total tally to $992,028 in North America.
Meanwhile, the worldwide box office collection of "Theri" has reportedly crossed Rs. 100-crore mark. By the end of its first week, it has reached this feat to become the third movie of Vijay to have achieved such a feat after "Thuppakki" and "Kaththi."
"Theri" has emerged a decent grosser in several overseas markets. In the U.K., Australia and France, it has done great business. The estimated overseas business is now nearing Rs. 35-crore mark.
The Tamil movie is an action movie with lots of emotions. Samantha and Amy Jackson are the female leads in Atlee Kumar-directorial movie.
