Ilayathalapathy Vijay's "Theri" is releasing big worldwide April 14 for the Tamil New Year. The movie, with its Telugu version, is expected to release in somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 screens. Now, all eyes are set on the box office records that the latest movie would possibly set in the days to come.
Of all the records, people are curious to see whether "Theri" will break the opening day record, presently held by "Vedalam," in Tamil Nadu. The Ajith Kumar-starrer had earned Rs. 15.5 crore on the first day of its release.
"Vedalam," which had released in 520+ screens in Tamil Nadu, had broken the previous records of Rajinikanth's "Lingaa," which had earned Rs. 12.8 crore, and Vijay's "Kaththi," which collected Rs. 12.5 crore on the first day to set a new benchmark.
Now, "Theri" is showing the signs of breaking the opening day record of "Vedalam." If the response to the advance booking is taken into the consideration, the Vijay-starrer could register an amazing opening April 14.
In Chennai, tickets of the movie are selling like hotcakes. Leading multiplexes started the advance booking a few days ago and the servers of many websites have crashed due to the huge response.
"We apologise for the server crash at Ags please use http://www.bookmyshow.com counter sales will open from 10:30 am today (Tuesday) in all 3 locations," Archana Kalpathi, the CEO of AGS Cinemas, confirmed the news on Twitter.
On the opening day, the movie has over 250 shows alone in the capital city of Tamil Nadu. The response is similar in many other centres, including Coimbatore. Hence, people are expecting "Theri" to collect over Rs. 15.5 crore.
Huge Response in Overseas
"Theri" is getting a grand welcome in the overseas market too. The film is releasing in close to 150 screens in the U.S. and it is expected to earn good money from Thursday premiere shows. The film is opening big in Malaysia and in the U.K. as well.
