Jayam Ravi starrer "Thani Oruvan" has struck gold at the Chennai box office. The Tamil movie also beat Bollywood movie "Phantom" in its opening weekend in the Capital city of Tamil Nadu.
"Thani Oruvan" has opened to highly positive reviews with critics and audience giving at least 3+ out of 5 rating to the movie. After enjoying a decent first day, the Tamil flick went on to make stupendous business on Saturday and Sunday.
The movie has earned Rs 1.28 crore from 240 shows in its first weekend in Chennai. This is the best opening for him in 2015 after "Romeo Juliet", which had made a business of Rs 72.76 lakh in the first weekend, and "Sakalakala Vallavan", which had raked in Rs 57.85 lakh from 156 shows, reports Behindwoods. The good word-of-mouth has done magic for "Thani Oruvan".
Bollywood's latest release "Phantom", which stars Katrina Kaif and Saif Ali Khan, has got a decent opening at the Chennai box office. The Hindi flick has collected Rs 20.18 lakh from 66 shows in its first weekend. However, the film is unlikely to remain in theatres for long due to average reviews garnered by the film from the audience.
Arya and Santhanam starrer "Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga" is in the third position at the Chennai box office. The Tamil film has raked in Rs 13.98 lakh from 78 shows. The total collection of the movie now stands at Rs 2.55 crore by the end of its third weekend.
SS Rajamouli's "Baahubali" is still being played in limited screens in Chennai. The film earned Rs 10.69 lakh to take its total tally to Rs 8.10 crore by the end of its eighth weekend.
The other Tamil release, "Thakka Thakka", could only make Rs 8.80 lakh in its first weekend. Simbu's "Vaalu" has slowed down at collection centres as the film could only make Rs 8.31 lakh. The total business made by this film at the Chennai box office now stands at Rs 2.49 crore.
