Rafael Nadal is enjoying an amazing run in the clay court season and is the hot favourite to win the ongoing French Open as well. The former world number one, in fact, is gunning for 'La Decima' of French Open titles.
It will be an astonishing feat if Nadal manages to win his 10th French Open title. However, former tennis star and Novak Djokovic's coach, Andre Agassi believes Roger Federer's Australian Open win earlier in the year is even bigger than La Decima though the American understands the magnitude of Nadal's feat, if achieved.
There is a reason why Agassi puts Federer's Aus Open win higher than the expected La Decima.
Federer had come into the Australian Open 2017 after being out of action in the second half of 2016. Not many had the Swiss as the favourite for the first grand slam of the season, but what followed surprised everyone.
Federer rolled back the clock with some astounding tennis. Throughout the competition, he showed his class and played fearless tennis. It was not only his victory but his style of play, which stood out. Despite his age, 35, the Swiss showed some great character to emerge victorious in marathon matches too, at times.
To win the French Open once is a herculean performance - he's trying to win it for a 10th time. It's just remarkable," Herald Sun quoted Agassi as saying.
"I think the harder thing to put into perspective is what Federer accomplished in Australia. I mean six months away from the game, the competition and at his age (35) and he goes out there and wins the way he did with multiple five-setters."
"That's a little bit harder to tangibleise (sic) but winning 10 times - winning nine times, forget about 10 times - all you have to do is write that down on a piece of paper. It puts into perspective," he added.
Federer, who did not play a single competition on clay courts this season, will be seen on the grass courts and it will be interesting to see how he performs in his favourite grand slam -- Wimbledon.
