A 33-year-old murder accused allegedly hanged himself with his shirt in the lock-up in Telangana's Medak district on Thursday, 12 March.
When the police found Laxman hanging inside the cell at 4am, they rushed him to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Three policemen have been suspended in connection to the case on charges of negligence towards their duty.
According to NDTV, the doctors at Gandhi Hospital, where the man's body was brought, said that they could find marks on his neck and no other external injury on his body could be noticeable.
Laxman and his brother were arrested on charges of murdering a woman in December last year. They were also charged with setting her body on fire after killing her and later dumping it.
According to the police, Laxman had an affair with the woman and had taken loan from her. When she had asked him to return the money, Laxman and his brother reportedly killed her.
Laxman was working in Mumbai as a labourer from where he was arrested three days ago. He was then brought to Medak.
To meet the requirements of the National Human Rights Commission, the police have ordered an inquiry as the man died while in police custody.
