The Telangana Police on Sunday claimed to have solved the mystery behind the rape and murder of a minor girl with the arrest of her father, who allegedly committed the beastly act in an inebriated condition.
Meghawat Kamal (38) allegedly tried to mislead the police by lying that some unidentified people attacked him, kidnapped his 15-year-old daughter, gang raped and murdered her. He even inflicted an injury on his forehead to convince the police.
The incident took place on 21 May night in Ijrachittampalli near Vikarabad in Ranga Reddy district, about 75 km from Hyderabad.
The police, who had picked up some auto-rickshaw drivers on suspicion, finally cracked the case with the arrest of Kamal, a tribal.
Superintendent of police of Ranga Reddy M Srinivas told reporters at Vikarabad on Sunday that the contradictory statements and the body language of Kamal raised doubts and during the questioning he confessed.
Police arrested Kamal after scanning the CCTV images at Vikarabad railway station and based on other evidence.
Simran, a student of Class 8, was visiting her relatives in Hyderabad during her summer holidays. She was picked by her father. They boarded a train to Vikarabad and after alighting at the railway station, he took her on his motorbike.
Police said en route to the village, the man stopped at a liquor shop and consumed liquor. After a few minutes, he stopped the two-wheeler at an isolated place and raped her.
Kamal told the police that the girl pleaded with him not to kill her, but fearing that she might tell his wife and other family members, he strangulated her.
After committing the crime, Kamal went to the village and told people that some unidentified people attacked them, kidnapped his daughter, gang-raped and murdered her. He later also lodged a complaint with the police.
On Friday, the police had found the girl's body and began investigation. They picked up a few auto-rickshaw drivers on suspicion but made no progress. They finally arrested Kamal, who will be presented in court on Monday.
