Home grown car-maker Tata Motors is working on a performance spec version of the Tiago hatchback. The go faster version of the Tiago is rumoured to be coming with the name Tiago Plus and emerging reports says the company is planning to launch the hot hatch in November. Once launched, the Tiago Plus will be the most affordable hot hatch in the country.
The hot hatch segment in India is still in its infant stage with fewer products. Fiat Abarth Punto is the most powerful hatchback in India at present with 145bhp, followed by Ford Figo 1.5-Petrol that develops 110bhp. Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and TDI twin develops 104bhp, and that sums up the hot hatch segment of the country. The Tiago Plus is expected to be powered by a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol motor that could belt out a power of nearly 120bhp. The regular Tiago's top end diesel version is priced at Rs. 5.60 lakh. Hence, the Tiago Plus price can be expected between Rs. 6.5 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh. At that price point, it will undercut all its rivals, including upcoming Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS and Volkswagen Polo GT TSI.
In addition to the souped up engine, Tiago Plus is expected to feature lowered suspension and stiffer damping. This will provide more grip and stability while taking corners. The Tiago Plus is also expected to get an aggressive body kit. The kit may include sportier front and rear bumpers, side skirts, spoiler and side decals.
