Considering the growth and popularity of compact SUVs in India, Tata Motors had unveiled Nexon compact SUV concept, which was displayed at the 2014 Auto Expo.
Analysing the immense success of Hyundai Creta recently, Tata Motors is working on another compact SUV with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, reports MotorOctane.
The compact SUV is likely to use the new 1.5-litre multijet diesel engine which Fiat is currently working on. It would be easier for Tata to get it manufactured in Ranjangaon and utilise the Fiat diesel engine. However, there is no confirmation on using Fiat sourced engine or going with own engine.
Nexon on the other hand is the first compact SUV to come out from the Tata's stable in 2016. The concept was based on the slightly modified X1 platform that also underpins Bolt and Zest compact sedan. If reports are to be believed, the production version of the small SUV will be unveiled at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo.
Apart from these two compact SUVs, Tata is also planning an XUV500 rivalling SUV with the inputs from Land Rover. The vehicle will be a full blown off-roader with a proper 4×4 system.
There is a high probability of this vehicle being the next generation Safari. Tata Motors has given code-name Q501 and Q502 for the premium SUVs in the joint venture with Land rover. Tata Motors will be looking at getting these SUVs in 2017 or by 2018.
It is reported that Tata Motors currently holds just 5% of the SUV market share. The strategy to launch many SUVs is to increase the presence as well as to increase the overall domestic sales which is in reverse gear for the past couple of years.
At the moment, Tata Motors is concentrating on perfecting Hexa MPV and Kite hatchback. Kite hatchback is expected to be launched by the end of 2015. Hexa crossover MPV will debut in India in early 2016.
