Tata Motors in association with Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives revealed performance oriented Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP version at the Auto Expo 2018 in February. However, there was no news regarding any further development of the models and that had led to some reports claiming that Tata Motors had shelved the project.
However, a report in Financial Express claims the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP project are still on without any uncertainty. The report also claims Tata Motors is planning to launch performance-spec models in October 2018 although the company has not officially claimed any launch date.
For the uninitiated, JTP stands for Jayem Tata Performance. Jayem Automotives is run by J Anand, the main man behind Formula 2000 Cars single-seater race cars used in the MRF National Racing Championship. He is also the mastermind behind one-off Super Nano with 1300cc Superbike motor and a centrally placed driver's seat.
Tata Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP
Tata and Jayem will employ the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine from the Nexon in both Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP. Combined with additional tweaks in the intake and exhaust systems, the engine will belt out 110hp of power and 150Nm of torque.
To put it in perspective, the 1.2-litre three-cylinder Revotron petrol in the regular Tiago and Tigor models produces only 83.8bhp of power and 114Nm of torque.
The potent engine will come mated to a five-speed manual transmission with optimized gear ratios for superior acceleration. In addition, the suspension of both performance models has been tuned for precision with reduced ground clearance for better handling.
Both the souped-up Tiago and Tigor has set themselves apart with a range of additions over the regular models. The Tiago and Tigor JTP feature a new and large grill, smoked projector headlamps, bonnet and fender vents. The 15-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and side skirts add muscle to the side profile while a diffuser on the rear bumper carries the sporty theme to the rear.
The all-black theme inside cabin complements the overall sporty feel of the cars. In addition, sporty accents on AC vents, premium leather seats and steering with contrast red stitching add drama. Both cars also flaunt a high-end infotainment system by Harman with eight speakers.
Tata Tiago JTP will go up against the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS while there no rivals for the Tigor JTP for now in India.
