The husband of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa Jayakumar, Madhavan, launched a new political party -- MGR Jayalalithaa Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MJDMK) -- on Friday. An event was organised at Jayalalithaa's memorial at Marina beach in Chennai.
Madhavan and Deepa had launched MGR Amma Deepa Peravai on February 24, but soon differences cropped up between the two. Madhavan claimed that some "evil forces" had taken over the party due to which he could not work independently. Therefore, he had quit the party.
Madhavan and Deepa had formed MGR Amma Deepa Peravai in opposition to the election of Edappadi K Palanisamy of the Sasikala camp to the chief minister's post in Tamil Nadu.
"Palanisamy is not the right person people wanted as a chief minister of Tamil Nadu. This kind of hijacking of the party is not good. There is a traitor group working behind the government and we will work continuously to throw away this group," Deepa had said.
