Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi was on Wednesday taken into custody in Uttar Pradesh only to be granted bail later in a case of poll code violation.
A Rampur court had sentenced him to a year in jail for breaching the model code of conduct six years ago.
"It is a politically motivated case," Naqvi said, according to NDTV.
The police had accused the BJP leader of defying prohibitory orders while campaigning for the 2009 national election.
Naqvi's supporters reportedly protested outside a police station after his convoy was stopped by the police for checking. He reportedly addressed the protesting workers and was among 200 people booked at the time.
Including Naqvi, 19 people have been found guilty.
The BJP has termed the one-year jail sentence as an "overreaction" to a peaceful protest.
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is the Minister of State for Minority Affairs in the central government.
