"Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" or "Clean India" campaign was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 October to coincide with Gandhi Jayanti. Modi took a broom in his hands to initiate the campaign and nominated several famous personalities to do the same.
Modelling the campaign on "Ice Bucket Challenge", Modi invited Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, industralist Anil Ambani, actor Salman Khan, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actress Priyanka Chopra, actor Kamal Hassan, Goa governor Mridula Sinha, yoga guru Baba Ramdev and the team of Hindi sitcom "Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma" to create a chain of participants.
Modi also asked the celebrities to nominate nine each in their turn to support the campaign.
PeeCee (Priyanka Chopra) accepted to support "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" in which her mother also accompanied her. Chopra chose to clean up a place in Versova, where she had shot her blockbuster film "Agneepath". She put a lot of effort to transform the place, which was covered with heaps of dirt, into a clean and beautiful playground for children.
Sachin Tendulkar also accepted the challenge,and even uploaded a video on Facebook in which he says, "Swachh Bharat hi Sach Bharat Hai ("A Clean India is the True India"). Aao sab milkar haath badhaye (let us all come together)".
"Kick" star Salman Khan kick-started the cleanliness drive at Karjat in Maharashtra and nominated Aamir Khan, Rajinikanth and seven others to spread the message.
Nagarjuna was nominated by Anil Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Group, as his ambassador to spread the "Swachh Bharat" campaign. Along with his sons, the actor took to the street to carry out his commitment to support the movement.
Trisha Krishnan is the latest South Indian actress to join the campaign, when Samantha and she cleaned up an animal home in Chennai.
Apart from them, handsome hunk Hrithik Roshan, actress Tamannaah Bhatia, sportsperson Sania Mirza, actress Hema Malini, Kamal Haasan, actor Amitabh Bachchan and several celebs joined the campaign.
Big B even went ahead to support "Clean India" and initiated "Banega Swachh India" recently. The 12-hour live televised cleanathon event was graced by many celebs, including Shashi Tharoor, Priyanka Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha, Arjun Kapoor, Govinda, Dia Mirza, Tusshar Kapoor, Boman Irani and Javed Akhtar.
