The Annual Surf City Surf Dog Competition completed its sixth year on Sunday, attracting around 65 talented, four-legged competitors to the Huntington Beach in California.

This has been the most popular edition of the competition so far and was attended by at least 2,500 people, raising an early estimate of more than $6,000 for its non-profit partners, Orange County Register reported.

The California Beach, which is considered somewhat of a Mecca for the holidaying dog owners, was the venue for the sporty canines, which competed in various categories based on their weight class: small, medium, large and extra-large breed. There was even a tandem event specifically designed for humans and their canine companions to surf together.

"This is our largest event yet," organiser Lisa Scolman told Los Angeles Register. "It's exciting to see where dog surfing is going and to see it growing and growing."

The Surf City Surf Dog Competition, which boasts "three days of doggone fun for all", began on Friday around 6 pm with a red carpet event called the "Yappy Hour". From then on, it has been non-stop fun for the furry sports, with the PAWabunga Costume Contest, Dog Surfing History Exhibit, International Surf Dog Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony, Canine Expo, and finally the main event - the Surf Dog Competition.

Kiehi, a "doxie-hua-hau" mix, took home the first prize in small dog category, while Brandy, the Pug bagged the first prize in medium dog category. Kalani, alsoknwn as the 'Lil Surfer Girl' won in the large dog category and Bono and Kona Kai took home the number one tag in TANDEM.

The Surf City Surf Dog events are not just about fun and competition, they also raise money for dog-related causes.

Some of the organisations it benefits include Barks of Love, which rehabilitates and re-trains abandoned and abused animals in Southern California, Dog Beach, a one-mile stretch of golden sands in Southern California where dogs can run and swim, the French Bulldog Village, a rescue group whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home French Bulldogs and French Bulldog mixes and Westie Rescue of Orange County, which rescues, rehabilitates and finds homes for West Highland White Terriers.
